The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has recently redefined the risk of lead exposure. The two major focuses of this redefinition are the level of lead considered too high for the blood stream of children and how to prevent lead exposure nationwide.

The level of concern for lead exposure hasn’t been changed since 1991.  The blood lead level of concern hasn’t changed for over two decades from 10 micrograms per deciliter.

The new reference value is based on population blood lead levels and the level of concern will be focused on children with the highest blood lead levels (BLLS). This high would be above the 97.5th percentile.

The revised value is currently set at five micrograms per deciliter to make children requiring follow-up services go from less than 100,000 to 450,000.

This new policy will allow parents to have the needed information to protect their families from lead. This is extremely important because the damage caused by lead poisoning is irreversible.

Out of residential properties, older housing with lead based paint and easy dust and soil generation are the main sources of lead exposure for children. CDC plans on teaming up with housing officials and the public health community to strengthen prevention efforts.

To help your family prevent lead exposure, keep your home as lead-free as possible. Lead-safe work practices go along way with home renovation, repairs and target resources.

This year, CDC will no longer use the term “level of concern” when discussing lead exposure. Instead a reference value and date of the NHANES will be used to calculate the reference value.

Advance Mold Remediation, a mold remediation company, can inspect your home for lead exposure. If lead is present, we can safely do a lead cleanup. Excess lead is extremely dangerous. Let Advance Mold Remediation protect your property and health from lead today.
